For any finitely based variety of orthomodular lattices, the authors determine the size of all equational bases that are both irredundant and self-dual. In particular, they present self-dual identities which characterize the following classes when lattice theory is assumed: (i) complemented lattices, (ii) ortholattices, (iii) orthomodular lattices.
