The author introduces a new definition for the local boundary dilatations of points in Teichmüller spaces of simply connected plane domains. In the case of Jordan domains, the author's definition is the same as the usual ones. To this end, the author studies the existence problem of locally extremal Beltrami differential posed by F. Gardiner and N. Lakic. It is shown that the answer to a problem posed by F. Gardiner and N. Lakic is affirmative according to this new definition.
