Given an orthogonal matrix there are two well known methods for generating an orthogonal matrix with a given first column, namely the Householder reflector and a suitable product of Givens rotations. Based on an observation by \textit{A. S. Householder} and \textit{K. Fox} [J. Comput. Phys. 8, 292--294 (1971; Zbl 0221.65069)] the authors present a new representation of an orthogonal matrix with given first column.
