Given a bounded domain \(\Omega\) in the complex plane, the authors consider the Cowen--Douglas class \(B_1(\Omega)\) and provide an equivalent characterization of the similarity between two operators \(T,S\in B_1(\Omega)\) in terms of the maximal ideal structure of the commutant of \(T\oplus S\). Moreover, they describe the \(K_0\)-groups of the commutant of any operator \(T\in B_1(\Omega)\).
