Self-sustained relaxation oscillations in a model of two single-mode semiconductor lasers, coupled in such a manner that the cavity loss rate of each one is proportional to the output of its counterpart, are studied in terms of the rate equations for photon and carrier densities. The existence of a self-pulsing regime featuring spiky antiphase pulsations of laser output intensities is inferred from the system of four ordinary differential equations by applying linear stability analysis and a multi-scale perturbation technique.
