The author studies a generalization of the arachnoid mechanism where the ``arms'' are arbitrary piecewise smooth curves of a fixed length. The initial points of the ``arms'' are vertexes of a convex polytope \(P\subset \mathbb R^3\). The author shows that the homotopy type of the configuration space of such a mechanism depends on the polar polytope \(P^{\triangle}\).
