Although the liar paradox and various elaborations of it gave rise to detailed discussions during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, these were soon entirely replaced by briefer comments whose inspiration was wholly classical. In this paper I survey the logical literature from 1400 to 1700 in order to make clear where and how these changes in emphasis and approach took place. I also discuss the way in which logical paradoxes were classified, and I examine in detail three types of solution which were offered.
