K. F. Roth [Math. Ann. 169, 1--25 (1967; Zbl 0151.03604)] has established a theorem on the irregularities of sequences relative to arithmetic progressions via an indirect method. The aim of this paper is to present the most important features of a direct proof of the theorem, a detailed account of which can be found in the author's Ph. D. thesis (University of London, 1969).
