Methods of the linear respose theory are developed and extended to tackle the case of a nonlinear medium. The nonlinear polarization of a medium under the influence of an applied electric field is described in terms of a power series in the external field. The nonlinear response function for the electric dipole approximation and its Fourier transform are discussed.
