The well-known \textit{C. Godbillon}'s geometrization of mechanics [Géométrie différentielle et mécanique analytique (Nouv. Tirage), Paris: Hermann (1985; Zbl 0653.53001)] is generalized in order to include nonregular Lagrangians and nonstandard force fields. Also, an inverse problem of variational calculus, naturally associated to a Godbillon system, yields a geometric framework based on force fields derives from generalized potentials. The last section is devoted to two examples (from classical and relativistic particle dynamics) of regular and nonregular Godbillon systems with generalized potentials.
