In the paper chaotic traffic flow is studied. The discrete dynamic model is given in the logistic form. The model employs occupancy as its variable and the ratio of free flow speed and average speed as the control parameter. From the properties of the logistic map the model bifurcates when the value of the control parameter is greater than three. As the bifurcation point is observed, the chaotic behavior of the model becomes unstable and unpredictable. The proposed control method can be constructed with a noise background and without exact model. This advantage makes the control strategy applicable to an actual road. The study considers the implementation of chaotic control in signal or ramp metering design so as to stabilize the chaotic traffic phenomena. The results are illustrated by numerical examples.
