In a hyperbolic surface \(S\), the number of simple closed geodesics of length bounded by \(L\) is asymptotic to a constant times \(L^{\dim T(S)}\), where \(T(S)\) is the Teichmüller space of \(S\). This result was proved by Maryam Mirzakhani. This paper simplifies her proof.
