The author considers a class of banded ``striped'' matrices (i.e. the nonzero diagonals are separated by one or more zero ones). He shows that under certain hypothesis the inverse matrix exhibits a similar ``striped'' structure. His approach and results has as principal scope the construction of efficient preconditioners for systems arising from radiation transport equations.
