Professor Kiyosi Itô was born on September 7, 1915 in Mie, Japan. Professor Itô has given to mathematics and to probability theory in particular, by naming this prize in his honor. Itô's work has found applications in physics; other branches of mathematics such as harmonic analysis, differential geometry, partial differential equations, and numerical analysis; biology; electrical engineering; and most recently economics.
