It is shown that there exist finite lattices that are representable as the congruence lattice of a finite algebra, but not representable as the congruence lattice of an infinite locally finite algebra. Moreover, there exist algebraic lattices that are not isomorphic to the congruence lattice of any locally finite algebra at all.
