The authors establish an analogue of the character formula of \textit{T. Hirai} [Probab. Math. Stat. 33, No. 2, 353--362 (2013; Zbl 1284.20007)] for closed subgroups of compact hypergroups. The notion of induced representation of a compact hypergroup is introduced. Characters and induced characters of finite-dimensional representations of a compact commutative hypergroup of strong type are studied. The case of compact semi-direct product hypergroup is also considered.
