Vorankündigung: Das System \[ y_i(qx)={\sum\limits_{j=1}^{n}}a_{i,j}(x)y_j(x)\quad(i=1,2,\dots,n) \] mit \(| q|\neq1\), \(a_{i,j}(x)\) regulär bis auf Pole für \(x = \infty\), Det.~\(|a_{i,j}(x)|\neq0\) kann in der folgenden kanonischen Form geschrieben werden: \[ y_i(qx)={\sum\limits_{j=1}^{i}}x^{\nu j}q^{\varrho j}c_{i,j}(x)y_j(x) \] mit \(c_{i,i}\equiv1\), \(c_{i,j}(x)\) für \(j < i\) ein Polynom in \(\dfrac1x\).
