Some inverse boundary value and coefficient identification problems for elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic partial differential equations are reviewed within the unified approach of gradient algorithms. The review is based on the second author vast experience and expertise on inverse problems, but many references are still missing for such a wide topic in applied mathematics. Just as an example, ``everybody has a Cauchy problem in his life'' and the list of references in the book by \textit{O. Fattorini}, `The Cauchy problem' (1983) extends over 100 pages.
