By a result of \textit{F. P. Greenleaf} [Pac. J. Math. 15, 1187--1219 (1965; Zbl 0136.11402)], the nontrivial contractive idempotent measures on a locally compact group have the form \(\rho m_K\) with \(m_K\) the Haar measure of a compact subgroup \(K\) and \(\rho\) a multiplicative character on \(K\). The author presents a precise criterion when two such idempotent measures commute. Moreover, related examples, groups of measures, and convergence results for powers of products of such measures are studied.
