Die Arbeit ist im wesentlichen eine englisch geschriebene Darstellung der früher teils in Zeitschriftenaufsätzen, teils in dem Buch ``Strahlenoptik'' (Berlin, Springer, 1931; F.~d.~M. 57) in deutscher Sprache veröffentlichten Untersuchungen des Verf., in denen er gezeigt hat, daß sich die bekannten Gesetze und Beziehungen der \textit{Gauß}schen Optik aus einer optischen Differentialinvariante durch Spezialisierung der dort auftretenden Größen ableiten lassen (s. vorstehendes Referat).
