Für die \textit{Gauß}sche Behauptung, daß das arithmetische Mittel von \(n\) Beobachtungen der wahrscheinlichste Wert sei, haben \textit{Whittaker} und \textit{Robinson} (The calculus of obser\-vations (London, 1929), p. 215-217) eine axiomatische Begründung gegeben. Sie ist nach Meinung des Verf. falsch und wird -- auch an Hand älterer Quellen -- in der vorliegenden Arbeit diskutiert.
