    Die betrachteten Funktionen \(D_n(x)\) und \(D_{-(n+1)}(\pm ix)\) sind Lösungen der Differentialgleichung \[ \frac {d^2y}{dx^2}+\left (n+\frac 12-\frac 14x^2\right )y=0, \] und es ist \[ D_n(x)=e^{-\frac {x^2}4}U_n(x),\quad U_n(x)=\frac 1{2^{\frac n2}}H_n\left (\frac x{\sqrt 2}\right ), \] wo die \(H_n\) \textit{Hermite}sche Polynome bedeuten. Die Funktionen \(D_n^2(x)\) und \(D_{-(n+1)}^2(\pm ix)\) genügen der Differentialgleichung \[ \frac {d^3y}{dx^3}+(4n+2-x^2)y^\prime -xy=0, \] für die der Ansatz \[ y=\sum \limits _{\nu =0}^\infty a_\nu U_\nu (x) \] die zwei in einem gewissen endlichen Intervalle \(a\leqq x\leqq b\) absolut und gleichmäßig konvergenten Reihen \[ y_1=a_{2n+1}\left (U_{2n+1}(x)-\frac {n+1}{2(2n+3)}U_{2n+3}(x) +\frac {(n+1)(n+2)}{2\cdot 4\cdot (2n+3)(2n+5)}U_{2n+5}(x)+\dotsb \right )\leqno (1) \] \[ y_2=b_0\left (U_0(x)+\frac 1{2\cdot (2n-1)}\frac {U_2(x)}2 +\frac {1\cdot 3}{2\cdot 4\cdot (2n-1)(2n-3)}\frac {U_4(x)}{2^2}+\dotsb \right )\leqno (2) \] als Lösungen liefert; ist \(n\) eine nicht negative ganze Zahl, so liefern (1) und (2) bei entsprechender Wahl der Konstanten \[ D_0(x)\left (e^{(n+\frac 12)\pi i}D_{-(n+1)}^2(ix)+ e^{-(n+\frac 12)\pi i}D_{-(n+1)}^2(-ix)\right ) \] beziehungsweise \(D_0(x)\cdot D_n^2(x)\).
