This investigation of the abstract interpolation problem is based on the theory of open systems. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part the definitions and facts from the theory of open systems are presented which are needed subsequently. The second part is devoted to the study of the abstract interpolation problem; applications to specific interpolation problems are not considered.
