Fixed point sets in a prescribed homotopy class (Q2638591)

Let X be a compact ANR-space, \(f:X\to X\) be a continuous mapping and A a closed subset of X. Then the following very interesting problem can be considered: ``Is there a continuous mapping \(g:X\to X\) homotopic to f such that \(Fix(g)=\{x\in X\); \(g(x)=x\}=A?''\) Using the Nielsen fixed point theory methods, the author states two necessary conditions for the realization of A as the fixed point set of some g. It is shown that in many cases the above necessary conditions are also sufficient.
