Generalising the work of \textit{S. M. Green} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 62, 229- 232 (1977; Zbl 0381.20032)] the author describes the special subgroup of the multiplicative group of a weakly perfect ring in terms of generators and relations. The determinant, which is introduced, generalises that of Dieudonné.
