The main result of the paper concerns necessary conditions for the strong ellipticity of elastic energy functions. Instead of the classical approach that solves the frame-indifference requirement in nonlinear elasticity using the Cauchy-Green deformation tensor \(C=F^TF\), the authors use the \(QR\)-expansion (with \(Q\) orthogonal and \(R\) upper triangular with positive elements on the diagonal). The necessary conditions for the strong ellipticity in the \(QR\)-expansion framework require a straightforward change of variables between the Cauchy-Green strain tensor and \(R(F).\) As an illustration, a particular two-dimensional case is presented.
