The authors consider a nonlinear nonlocal initial value problem for surface quasigeostrophic fronts in one space dimension. They prove local existence of smooth solution under a convergence condition on the nonlinear term. Moreover, the maximal solution is global if the initial data is sufficiently smooth and small.
