This book gives an elementary introduction into statistics. It is already the fourth edition since 1985; for the reviews of the first and second edition from 1985 resp. 1989 see Zbl 0623.62002 resp. Zbl 0727.62004. A short introduction into the analysis of variance (ANOVA) is contained as a new chapter in the fourth edition.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe first chapters of the book give a general introduction into statistics and explain methods of descriptive statistics. The following chapters deal with elementary probability theory. The main part of the book is devoted to methods of inductive statistics and includes the following topics: confidence intervals, parametric and nonparametric hypothesis testing (t--, z--, and F--tests as well as sign tests, the Wilcoxon signed rank test, and the Mann--Whitney U--test), analysis of variance, contingency tables including \(\chi^2\)--tests, correlation coefficients, regression analysis, and goodness--of--fit tests for proportions and for binomial, Poisson, and normal distributions. All these methods are explained by examples. For users of Minitab for Windows there are instructions to perform these methods by computer. The book is completed by many exercises and their solutions, and some tables concerning distributions which are needed for the statistical methods.
