The well-known authors show that the possibility theory of \textit{L. A. Zadeh} [Fuzzy Sets Syst. 1, 3-28 (1978; Zbl 0377.04002)] is a non-classical tool to model vague information described by fuzzy sets, a tool essentially different from probability theory. The following basic topics of this theory are deeply discussed: possibility and necessity measures, possibility distributions, possibilistic conditioning and possibilistic independence.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEA final mathematical appendix clarifies all the concepts presented, essentially the Sugeno and Choquet integrals used in fuzzy set theory for evaluating the uncertainty of a fuzzy event.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0942.00007].
