A very interesting and up to date overview on the design of multidimensional filters (MDF) is provided. It is shown that the three basic properties which must be imposed to MDF are: perfect reconstruction, linear phase and optimality with respect to a certain class of signals. It is emphasized that the very advantages of MDF can be obtained precisely when the channels interfere each other, i.e., do not reduce to a simple tensor product of 1-D channels, the case when the transfer function is separable. Various approaches are analyzed and as a conclusion, in the authors' opinion, the polynomial approach is the most promising since the analytical form of the response can be obtained. The paper shows to what extent function analysis, discrete-time systems theory and basic facts from physiology join together to provide optimal solutions to problems raised by contemporary communication systems.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0952.00062].
