Tarski arrived in New York from Warsaw in August 1939 to speak at the Unity of Science meeting in Harvard at the invitation of W. V. O. Quine. Unable to return after the September invasion of Poland, the strong support of Harvard professors Quine and Marshall Stone resulted in his temporarily filling the position Bertrand Russell would have taken at City College of New York if the College had not given in to the pressure to fire this supporter of ``free love''. There Kenneth Arrow was one of his students. The account continues with a job at Berkeley and the consequent creation of a significant logic program there. The story is rich in key personalities of the time who figure both negatively (Richard Courant) and positively (besides Quine and Stone, there were Innocenty Bocheński, Heinrich Scholz, and Anders Wedberg among others).NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0948.00030].
