Letters to Kurt Gödel, 1942-47 (edited by Jan Tarski) (English)

Ten letters, in the period 1942-1944, have been translated from Tarski's diplomatic German into English. An additional six, 1945-1947, were written in English. Apart from a letter in 1970, these represent all the extant letters from Tarski to Gödel in the latter's papers at Princeton. (There are several copies of letters from Gödel and these will be published in his \textit{Collected papers}.) Written after Tarski had settled at Berkeley, they show a friendly if not close relationship between the two and reflect the combination of Tarski's deep involvement in work and of his anxiety over his family who were still in Poland but hoping to join him. Perhaps because of this very involvement there is very little depth in the letters, which tend to be short: no personal detail, no observations of surroundings or events, and little mention of other people.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0948.00030].
