The book under review consists of a collection of articles which focus on the Neohellenic mentality of Greek mathematical culture during the post-Byzantine period. These articles deal respectively with the `historiographical context of the first printed Greek book of mathematics', the fate of `linear perspective', the `transmission of Algebra' and the `reception of the Infinitesimal Calculus' within the Neohellenic culture, and lastly `The influence of French Mathematics' during the period 1800-1840. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe author deviates from a mere descriptive presentation of isolated episodes, in an attempt to highlight the crucial changes that underlay the development of Greek mathematical rational thought from the Byzantine (and ancient Greek) model to the modern one of the early 19th century. Moreover, he emphasizes the joint endeavours of the intellectuals who were active at that time, paying special attention at the intricate role of the Orthodox Church, as considerably affected then by Catholic interventions and Protestant influences. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEEnriched with an exhaustive up-to-date bibliography, this work forms an indispensable acquisition within modern historiography on Greek mathematical education.
