Motion and expansion of a viscous vortex ring: Elliptical slowing down and diffusive expansion (English)
0 references
The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to study the motion of an axisymmetric vortex ring of small cross-section. The authors construct higher order asymptotics and give a general formula for translation speed, incorporating the slowing down effect caused by the elliptical deformation of ring core. It is shown that the viscosity expands the ring radius, simultaneously with swelling of the core, starting from an infinitely thin circular loop.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0954.00054].
