This paper deals with the problem of designing a variable structure controller for a plant with a modelled part of relative degree one. A new scheme is given and the main features of the new scheme are that the transient and steady state performance of the system tracking error which are given by the designer in advance, can be achieved regardless of the high frequency gain sign.
