The authors study the critical groups at degenerate critical points for functionals defined on Hilbert spaces. They obtain new computations of the critical groups and new results on abstract critical point theorems. The abstract results are applied to the study of the existence of nontrivial solutions of elliptic boundary value problems and Hamiltonian systems.
