The paper is concerned with the study of the so-called index of the Nielsen root class for maps \(f:M\to N\) on compact spaces. It is shown that the Nielsen root number \(N(f,a)\) has the usual basic properties and finally, necessary and sufficient conditions are found in order to ensure that a product formula for \(N(f,a)\) holds.
