The author presents the first French translation of H. Cohen's ''Das Prinzip der Infinitesimalmethode und seine Geschichte. Ein Kapitel zur Grundlegung der Erkenntniskritik'' first published in 1883 in Berlin (see JFM 15.0021.05; cf. also Zbl 0192.32504). The translation is based on the fourth German edition (1984) which included a name index. Differing from the original Cohen's quite extensive quotations in Latin are also translated.NEWLINENEWLINE The author supplemented the edition by a thorough comment. He describes some contextual aspects of the book, how it fitted in Cohen's oeuvre, how it related to some works of his contemporaries, as well as how Cohen's ideas and views developed. In this regard he characterizes some aspects of Cohen's epistemology and points out the differences between Cohen and Kant.
