A star-band is an idempotent semigroup with an additional unary operation \(*\) such that \(x^{**}\approx x\), \((xy)^*\approx y^*x^*\), and \(xx^*x\approx x\). In the article under review, for each star-band variety \(\mathcal V\), a hyperidentity \(\sigma\) is presented such that \(\sigma\) holds in \(\mathcal V\) but fails in any star-band variety \(\mathcal X\) with \({\mathcal X}\not\subseteq{\mathcal V}\).
