A generalized inverse problem for a two-dimensional difference operator is introduced. A new construction of the algebro-geometric difference operators of two types first considered by \textit{I. M. Krichever} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 285, 31-36 (1985; Zbl 0603.39004)] and by \textit{S. P. Novikov} [Usp. Mat. Nauk 52, No. 1, 225-226 (1997; Zbl 0903.34072)] is proposed.
