In this interesting survey article, the author analyses from a historical point of view several mathematical developments that culminated in the Dirac equation for relativistic electrons. The author uses this example to illustrate the applicability of mathematics to the physical sciences. Along his presentation, the author briefly touches upon the concepts of differentiation and integration, differential equations, Clifford algebra, quantum theory, energy in special relativity, and the index theorem. The article includes historical references and several suggestions for further reading.
