This paper contains a survey of applications of Latin squares in the design of tournaments. Latin squares can be used to schedule a wide variety of tournaments. Some of the tournaments described in the paper include tennis club tournaments, rowing regattas, home and away soccer matches, whist and bridge drives, and flat green bowling tournaments. The author includes a detailed account of unpublished (except in a Diploma Thesis) work by A. Tripke on finding tournaments balanced for carry--over effects.
