This is a survey of some main results in both theory and applications of automatic control accomplished by researchs living in the Chinese mainland over the past twenty years, particularly in recent years. 174 important publications are reviewed and listed in the reference.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEIt is conducted in eight sections. Each focusses on an area. The first section is about linear and singular systems, including output feedback problems, robust analysis and control. Section 2 is devoted to nonlinear systems such as affine nonlinear systems, systems with symmetry and interconnection, variable structure control and nonlinear control of power systems. Results related to identification are reviewed in Section 4. In Section 5, results on adaptive control are discussed in four parts: adaptive control of linear systems, robust, nonlinear and time-varying systems, adaptive feedback and limitation, and applications. The title for Section 6 is ``Stochastic control and optimization problems'', including the following topics: stochastic optimal control, forward and backward stochastic differential equations, stochastic approximation and optimization, and predictive control ``Distributed parameter systems'' is reviewed in Section 7 in which the following parts are included: optimal control, boundary control. Stability and pole assignment, and population system control. The final section is devoted to discrete events/marking system.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEA brief historical account is also given at the beginning.
