Let \(A\in M_n({\mathbb R})\) be a banded matrix of bandwidth \(s>0\), i.e. \(A_{kl}=0\) for \(|k-l|\geq s+1\). The elements of the exponential \(\exp{(A)}\) decay very rapidly away from the diagonal and in practical computation are almost zero away from some bandwidth \(r>s\). In this paper sharp computable bounds of the rate of decay are investigated.
