The denominator of a simple continued fraction is also called its continuant. Given two continuants, can one decide which of them is the greater one, without actually computing them? The author proves criteria for this problem that extend earlier results by \textit{T. S. Motzkin} and \textit{E. G. Straus} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 7, 1014-1021 (1957; Zbl 0077.01802)].
