In this survey the authors intend to present the actual status about the concept of surgery applied to the study of transformation groups, a pioneer idea of Ted Petrie on the middle of the 70's. They present the concept for the CW-category. Some applications include the space-form problem, semi-free actions on the disc, and Smith theory, among others. Solution of a conjecture of one of the authors is shown. The lack of proofs, with exception of some scetches, is balanced with a long list of references. Besides the fact that the emphasis is on finite group actions, the survey covers almost all recent developments in the field.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0957.00062].
