Convection in the environment (English)

This is a fundamental review devoted to the buoyancy-driven convection in the environment, with the particular focus on the convection in confined regions and on the development of stable stratification from isolated sources of buoyancy. This phenomenon can be of importance for the containment of reactive chemicals and for the natural ventilation of buildings. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe extended contents: 1. Introduction; 2. Rayleigh-Bénard convection (the statement of this classical problem and a discussion of the fundamental role of Rayleigh number); 3. Plumes and thermals (derivation of plume equations from the equations of motion, and solutions of plume equations for some environmental flows); 4. Double-diffusive convection (in a two-component stratified fluid); 5. Katabatic flows and gravity currents (including the effects of horizontally imposed temperature variations); 6. Effects of (Earth) rotation.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0952.00020].
