This article presents the text of the opening lecture in one of the seminars of the Third Conference on Banach Spaces in Jarandilla de la Vega, Caceres, Spain. The purpose of the author is ``to present the basic ideas towards a right understanding of several problems concerning twisted sums of Banach and quasi-Banach spaces''. A few interesting problems are mentioned, some known homological algebra tools are outlined, and several results are stated.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEReviewer's remarks: The style in which the article is written is quite pompous and not everybody would like it. As the author writes in the third line of his article ``the reader should not take everything what follows too seriously: after all, it was designed for a friendly seminar, late at night, talking about things around a table shared by whiskey, preprints and almonds.'' Probably a good advice.
