The author surveys the main descriptions of the lattice of varieties of bands (semigroups that consist of idempotents) and its variants, the varieties of band monoids, of *-bands and of *-band monoids. The original description of the lattice of varieties of bands is rightly termed ``probably the best single achievement in the theory of varieties ... of semigroups ...''.
