The aim of this paper is an investigation of the stability of boundary layers which appear in numerical solutions of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. The authors study the one-dimensional case and work with regular meshes. They prove the stability for Lax-Friedrichs-type schemes under the condition of small boundary data. In the case of one scalar equation unconditional stability of boundary layers is shown. In the last section two numerical counterexamples of unstable boundary layers are given.
